Hi! I'm Fred Felgate, a mastering engineer from Rowhedge, Essex, England. I found my way into the mastering game after discovering that music has a deeply technical side. Starting out as an electric guitarist, I quickly became comfortable with optimising signal chains and manipulating effects to achieve the desired emotional response. By my late teenage years, I had already become acquainted with more complex studio workflows that implement hybrid digital & analogue systems. After a few recording and production projects, I realised that what really draws me to a career in music is the behind-the-scenes work of making brilliant records. I love the whole process, from capturing the rawest emotional representation of a person performing their art, right up to when the final product is decided upon, and it is sealed into its final medium.
I've found that the skills that I have naturally developed through discovery and experimentation fit the role of the mastering engineer best. I care an awful lot about minute quality and detail, and my perspective on matching industry standards, whilst also recognising the importance of breaking rules to create new experiences serves me well when creating a final master.
